Functions of the tounge:

Speaking, eating, pushing food around, making words, pushing food into the throat

Parts of the tounge:

Frenulum- a membrane that connects your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. The base of your tongue is firmly anchored to the bottom of your mouth, so it is impossible to swallow your toung

Papille- your tongue is covered with a layer of bumps called papillae. Papille help grip food and move it around while you chew. They contain your taste buds. As a person ages, some of his or her taste buds die. That's why some foods may taste stronger to you than they do to an adult. Taste buds can detect sweet, sour, bitter, and salty flavors.

Microvilli- microscopic hairs that send messages to the brain, which interprets the signals and identifies the taste for you. Cold affects taste however, making tastes weaker.

lingual tonsil- back part of the tongue that helps filter germs

Palatine tonsils-two masses of tissue on either side of the tongue

Adenoids-help fight infections throughout your body.
